Course: Cutout Cookies, Rolled CookiesDifficulty: Medium

A cutout sugar cookie recipe for decorating. Meant to be rolled out thin for a crisp texture.

  • 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour (important: sift first, then measure)

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1-1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening

  • 3 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • frosting, icing or glaze, to decorate (optional)

  • Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add shortening, mixing with a fork. Add eggs and vanilla, stirring until well incorporated. Chill dough for several hours or overnight. Pre-heat oven to 375 F. Roll out chilled dough thinly on a floured surface (tip: roll between two sheets of waxed paper sprinkled with flour to keep from sticking). Cut with cookie cutters and bake on ungreased cookie sheet for about 8 minutes or until lightly golden in color.
  • If desired, when cool, decorate with one of our frosting, icing, or glaze recipes, or decorate with purchased decorators frosting.

  • Contributed by Maureen Yin, who adds: “I added a word to the dictionary during the Christmas Holidays–MomMoms Sugar Cookies: dough rolled out thinly on floured surface and cut with assorted Christmas shapes together with fun, laughter and love. Although MomMom has moved to heaven, as I roll and cut the same recipe along with the same cookie cutters, in the same kitchen the tradition started, the memories are etched in my thoughts. Thoughts of love and caring and MomMoms great smile with the bright twinkle of her eyes as she baked the best tasting sugar cookies ever made–in My Book, My Dictionary! Thank you MomMom!”

Hello to all bakers who bake this short textured yet crisp cookie. You will be reaching into the cookie tin that is filled with MomMoms Sugar Cookies until the last crumb. As you read in the intro to the recipe MomMom made these every Christmas with me by her side. She passed to me the knack of mixing and rolling. Thank you in advance for baking them!!! Maureen

They were not as good as other cookies from other websites, but they were easy and beautiful when they were finished. I would reccomend adding a lot of icing to inhance flavoring to them, and use a teaspoon or so more water to make them more moist. Don't roll them thin, because they burn very easily. Plus, thicker the better, and thicker the moister.

I love your mom's recipe and I am glad that you have brought it back to our generation. They are asolutely deliciuos -- these are the only sugar cookies that I'll eat! And I am just amazed how well they come out.

Absolutely loved this cookie!!! I used butter flavored crisco and this is the best sugar cookie I have tried. The only problem I had was the cookies stuck to the pans. Could just be my pans, I am going to try again and spray non-stick on the pans.

My grandson calls me mommom and we made the cookies for santa and of course for mommy and daddy and they were great but of course my grandson is only 22 months old so we had a fun time doing this with sugar and flour on us and the dog and cats!!! And they tasted great
I made these cookies on Christmas Eve. Mom Mom's wre the best sugar cookies I have ever tasted! Would definately make them again.

These truely have to be the best cookies I have ever made. To ice them I use a powdered sugar glaze which works great. Just make sure to not use to much flour when rolling out the dough, or else the cookies will come out dry and cakey.

too floury...almost like bread!!! As a matter of fact, I threw out the batter after the first batch!
