Course: Cookie Press CookiesCuisine: GermanyDifficulty: Medium

Grated chocolate gives a new flavor to this traditional German cookie.

  • 2/3 cup sugar

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1 large egg

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla

  • 1/4 cup coarsly grated semi-sweet chocolate (with a cheese grater)

  • 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • Heat oven to 400F. In large mixer bowl combine sugar, butter, egg, salt, and vanilla. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until mixture is light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add flour and coarsly grated semi-sweet chocolate. Beat at low speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed, 2 to 3 minutes. If dough is too soft, cover and refrigerate until firm enough to form cookies, 30 to 45 minutes. Place dough in cookie press. Form desired shapes 1 inch apart on cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 8 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.

These are perfect! Spritz cookies are NOT supposed to taste like "traditional chocolate chip cookies" - Spritz cookies are a type of cookie in their own right. They are not supposed to have the molasses taste of brown sugar (which I love in other cookies). Spritz cookies can also be made with shortening like Crisco or half shortening half butter. For a finer texture, use superfine sugar :)

taste great, but could not really get a shape out of them, they were to thick!

good cookie but I grated the chocolate too finely...so make sure you grate it coarsely like suggested. I am going to try again. And the dough is soft but I put it in the fridge for about 10 minutes and it was fine. I love the cookie press.

These are great. Just like the ones my Mom made when I was a kid. I'm going to frost them lightly. They go great in a bowl of ice cream as well. Careful not to overbake as being chocolate you might notice after the fact...
