Course: Ball Cookies, Hand-Shaped CookiesDifficulty: Easy

Dipped in red sugar on one side, and green sugar on the other, with a white stripe down the center, these cookies have the yeast-y flavor of a donut. Of course, this will also make an Italian flag (and others), and you can change colors to make many different striped flags! *

Ingredients

  • 2 packages active dry yeast

  • 1/4 cup warm water

  • 2 cups butter (4 sticks), softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 4-1/2 cups sifted flour (sift first, then measure)

  • Red and green colored sugar (or other colors to make different flags)

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350F. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Cream together butter and sugar. Beat until light and fluffy. Beat in egg. Blend in dissolved yeast. Gradually stir in flour. Chill dough for about 2 hours. Shape into 3/4″ balls. Dip one side in red sugar, the other in green sugar, leaving a clear stripe down the center. Place on buttered cookie sheets. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly browned. Remove from immediately to wire racks to cool.

Notes

  • * This works for flags that have a white strip in the middle, or that are two solid color blocks. Those would be: Algeria, Argentina, Austria, Bahrain, Belarus, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Canada, Croatia, Egypt, El Salvador, France, Guatemala, Holy See, Honduras, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lebanon, Lesotho, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Quatar, San Marino, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Syria, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Yemen. This Etsy seller has an astounding array of colored sugars for those who need just the right shade of blue (or green, or orange…they even have black, Egypt!).

This is not your traditional American cookie recipe, but that's why I like it. My daugter is Mexican and she helps me make these every year for her Adoption Day. We share them with her class and they all love them. And of course, the red & green colors make them great for Christmas.

★☆☆☆☆
When I made these cookies they were very bland and even bad tasting. In my opinion the festive sugar even looks cheap and rediculous. I would never make these again.

These cookies are very festive and colorful looking, but I did not like the taste very much. You can taste the yeast in the cookies. To me they were ho-hum.
