Course: Cutout Cookies, Rolled CookiesDifficulty: Medium

A buttery sugar cookie with a bit of crispiness.

  • 1 cup butter, softened

  • 1-1/2 cups powdered sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract

  • 2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar

  • granulated sugar (optional)

  • frosting or icing for decoration (optional)

  • Mix together sugar and butter. Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract; mix well. Blend in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours. Heat oven to 375 F. Divide dough in half. Roll each half 3/16 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters. If desired, sprinkle with granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until light brown on edges. When cool, decorate with frosting or icing, as desired. Yield depends on the size of your cookies cutters.

  • Source: This recipe was donated by a reader in 1999. We were later told that this is an old Betty Crocker recipe, and we found it (in slightly altered form) in an out-of-print cookbook called “Betty Crocker’s Cooky Book,” printed in 1963.

These are the favorite Christmas cookies of my family and friends that I make every year. Everyone loves them. I had used the recipe in an old Betty Crocker cookbook until it was illegible. So glad to find the recipe on line.

My Mom made these every year when I was growing up and with grandchildren. She passed down her Betty Crocker cook book to me and I’m making them for the first time in many years, so I can decorate cookies with my grandchild. Every recipe I make from this cookbook reminds me of baking with Mom.

Used this recipe since 1963 and when my page from the Betty Crocker cookbook almost disintegrated I was thankful to find the recipe online....not only good for Christmas I make all my holiday cookies, Easter, Valentines day, Birthdays, Halloween etc with this recipe.

As a little girl, my mother Sandra always made this receipe from her Betty Crocker's cookbook. When I was old enough to present, I continued the tradition. I am 58. These sugar cookies are as perfect in taste, texture and more. There are not hard or too soft or dull. They don't even need the frosting to be able to taste the old Christmas charm. Miss you mama.

Was in a Betty Crocker cookbook I received in 1966. I have made these cookies in Christmas shapes every since.

I have made this recipe for years! It is a very good cut out cookie dough. I have substituted caramel flavoring for the almond (when I ran out of Almond) Delicious. I bake these with sugar then after they cool I dip them in chocolate. Or I frost them with icing. I use the Wilton gel colors. I also add coloring to the dough its fun comes out neat esp leaves for fall. Today, Im going to make pumpkins and ice them and put candy corn for the eyes and chocolate chips for the mouth...Yummy concoction.

My mother-in-law gave me the old Betty Crocker cookbook for my first Christmas gift from her 54 years ago. This was one of the first recipes I tried and still make today. The secret is to use real butter. This is one of my children and grandchildren's favorite.
