Classic chocolate chip cookie mix packaged for gift-giving in a 1-quart jar. These make wonderful inexpensive and last-minutes gifts!

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1-1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

  • Prepare the jar:
  • Mix the salt and baking soda in with the flour, then layer the ingredients a quart-size jar in the order listed, with the chocolate chips on top. Note that you must pack down each layer tightly to get everything in the jar. Use scissors to cut a 9 inch-diameter circle from calico. Place over lid and secure with rubber band. Tie on a raffia or ribbon bow to cover rubber band.
  • Add the recipe card:
  • Enclose a card with the following mixing and baking directions:

Note: Store this jar in a cool, dark place for up to 3 months before using.

    Ingredients:
    contents of this jar
1 cup unsalted butter or margarine
    1 large egg
    1 teaspoon vanilla

    Directions:
Preheat oven to 375F (190C). Sift dry ingredients through a colander to separate the chocolate chips from other ingredients. Beat butter in a medium bowl until creamy. Beat sifted ingredients into butter until blended. In a small bowl, beat egg with vanilla. Mix beaten egg mixture into butter mixture until blended. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop teaspoonfuls of batter, spaced well apart, onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

This is the best chocolate chip cookie recipe I've ever used. Everyone I've baked these for LOVES them. They are so buttery and just the right amount of sweet+salt (I use salted butter)

This is really a great chocolate chip recipe, I also used this once for my daughter's class gift project. They loved measuring. It fits perfectly!

I used only one stick of butter and 2 eggs. Came out great. I could not fit the last 1/2 cup of chocolate chips in the jar =( But told my friends to add it. They have been raving about this recipe and have asked for the recipe to make more. Like it

you have to pack the ingredients down. Usually when you measure out ingredients (except for brown sugar) they are fairly loose in the measuring cup (at least they are supposed to be). To fit them into the jar you have to pack each layer together. The flour can lose half its volume if you pack it down enough. Never had any trouble with this recipe.

A student gave me this in a jar 5 years ago, and I finally made it. Even after sitting 5 years, and at 8500 feet altitude, they were fantastic. keep giving this to teachers! (But simplify the direxns.. no real need to sift, fluff, etc. Just mix it together and go.)
