A chocolate version of the classic German spritz cookie, made with a cookie press.

Ingredients

  • 1-1/4 cups butter at room temperature

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 2/3 cup packed brown sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 3-1/4 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cups cocoa powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 375 F. In a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer, beat butter and sugars until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. In another bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda and salt. Gradually stir flour mixture into butter mixture. Shape dough into a log and place in your cookie press. Press cookies out onto an ungreased baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
  • Optional: Decorate with sprinkles, candied cherries, melted white chocolate, or sandwich with vanilla frosting.

These are better than the plain spritz cookies we usually make. We drizzled red green, and white melts over them, and the cookie is nice not-too-sugary base for the toppings.

Made these with my kids.... I added extra chocolate and even added some almond extract... still bland. The kids like them, so that's what's important.

I would make them again but only with the marachino cherries

Just took the first tray out of the oven and tasted one. Nice and light and fluffy! Very tasty too. I can see these will be a family favourite already.

Made these with my 3 year old son...he can't get enough of them! He has also been a great helper and the cookies have all come out gorgeous and yummy. I baked them at 10 minutes and when fresh, they're still a little soft. Definitely a tasty chocolate recipe!

i am going to be making these again very soon!! I added about half a teaspoon of peppermint extract and wound up with a delightful chocolate peppermint sprits cookie. That is the only thing special i did. this recipe lends itself to more complex creations.
